my opponent's regeiation confueses me

Cause he/she is a retarded platyplus.
I've resigned from clearly winning positions in the past because something happen at my home that required immediate attention (i.e., one of my kids doing something dangerous that they shouldn't). They might have just mistakenly thought it was a losing position, but it could also be any number of things that you just have no way of knowing about.
@elan-the-bard, besides external factors like Little_Bobby_Tables pointed out (which happens with other online games, too), the shock factor of unexpected circumstances can sometimes rattle our calm/logic. I prematurely resigned in ( http://en.lichess.org/gdf9ykfS ) because I mistakenly concluded I would lose my rook without any compensation (after I -very- erroneously thought I had somehow circumvented my opponent's plundering with my queen move). There wasn't any time pressure and I wasn't even in danger of getting back rank mated, but I succumbed into thinking that I had already lost.
