Israel has never admitted they own a single nuclear weapon so I'm surprised there is media suggesting 1700 and that number is good.

In my opinion no country should have nuclear weapons,what's the point? to stop terrorism? unlikely and unpractical , To promote world peace?, No world almost ended half a dozen times due to nuclear weapons. The only reason why we have nuclear weapons is to scare our enemies, but what happens when a country that has a nuclear weapon(s) challenges another country that also has nuclear weapon(s) and the scare-our-enemies tactic fails?Nuclear war!The nations of the world(in my opinion) should ALL sign at the same time a non-nuclear weapons deal.

#18: Disregarding metaphors from various religions, even I myself have had an episode of sleep walking (somnambulism) once in my life, but others are unfortunate enough to be plagued with it chronically, especially children.

When Einstein said that the energy in something IS it's mass, times the speed of light squared, the cat was out the bag. It only took the next mass mobilisation of forces in Europe for funds to be pumped into exploiting that equation.
It is argued that nuclear weapons actually saved lives through 'Mutually Assured Destruction' during the Cold War and I would tend to agree with it. Why not get rid of them now through agreement? I would suggest that the international community has done it's best to prevent one country from acquiring them and that was almost impossible, so we are left in this situation.
There are a few countries that own nuclear weapons. With the one (two) exception, they have never been used. The focus needs to be on making sure those weapons don't fall into the wrong hands because I think that's where the immediate danger lies.
For the future? Seriously? I think we're all doomed but it's most likely the innate stupidity of the human race to breed like rabbits, drive fast cars and worship sky faeries that will kill us.
