Help from tech savvy people? :)

Ever since i updated to the latest windows few months back, the mouse pad in my laptop stopped functioning normally.

i can still move the cursor, but now i can't scroll up or down, or swipe to the left to open the menu.
however, i found a temporarily solution, each time i start my laptop i would go to the control panel, mouse settings, elan, options, and then set everything to defualt.
this fixes the issue until i restart my laptop.

is there a more permanent solution to this annoyance?
It sounds like you have a cheap or old laptop. My mum has a very cheap Acer netbook and the touchpad has worn down to the point of being nearly unusable.

The permanent solution? Get a good mouse. Touchpads are awful anyway. :) For what it's worth, very few laptops have build quality that is good enough to allow the touchpad to keep working for a long time.
Its a two years old Acer aspire, i really have no idea if its cheap or not :P

i really think its an error due to the update since the issue came up only after that, strange.
Haha, my mum has the Aspire One, which is from a roughly similar line. I wouldn't think a software update would harm it.

However, there are certain touchpads that send incorrect (or not enough) information through the cable. One no-name laptop I purchased from China had the issue, which I diagnosed by with the help of the Linux kernel.

That said, it's highly unlikely such an issue with the digital signals transmitted would develop later, so it is still, very likely, a hardware issue. The touchpad, has, simply put, run its course. :/

If you like the touchpad for its ergonomics and relative lack of strain on the wrist, you may want to consider a vertical mouse. Be careful when buying these, but I personally have this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-NEW-Delux-M618GL-wireless-vertical-mouse-cordless-mouse-2-4G-laser-upright-mices-health/882640189.html -- which you can also find in wired models. Outside of China, it is often sold under a different name for a much higher price. The only other choice in vertical mice I consider valid is the Evoluent, though that is a very pricey mouse indeed.
I've started using a wireless mouse and i started wondering why i liked the pad in the first place :P

And this is the first time i've heard of a vertical mouse :O, thank you for introducing this to me! :P
for speed chess a mouse is definetly better, but i guess i would also try to install the latest mouse driver for your laptop model. there is a good chance that this will fix the problem with the touchpad... after all you might want to use this piece of "mobile" beauty maybe sometime on the move, so go to acers website and search for your model on their support page and download the newest driver...
